The Diamond: Lauderdale-By-The-Sea
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a quaint seaside village on the Southeast coast of Florida, located in Broward County. The town is 1.5 miles in size and situated on a barrier island separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway and extending 1.5 miles to the Atlantic Ocean.
Unlike the neighboring cities of Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has a small community feel. There are no glitzy modern high rise hotels or condos, rather most of the hotels are family owned and the buildings feature mid-century architecture standing no more than four stories high.
The town’s 6,000 residents, as well as seasonal snowbirds and tourists, enjoy a low-key, quiet, slow paced lifestyle. In fact, the motto is “Relax, You’re Here!” You don’t even need a car to get you around, everything you need is within walking distance — the beach, sidewalk cafes, boutique shops, public plazas, outdoor live music, and much more.
In 2013, the downtown area along Commercial Blvd. was revamped and redesigned to make it more pedestrian friendly. The roadway was narrowed and shut off to traffic and the sidewalks were widened. Today, this area is made up of a series of public plazas or communal gathering places where you can sit on oversized Adirondack chairs and people watch.
Lauderdale-by-the-sea is home to the only ocean pier in Fort Lauderdale. Anglin’s Pier is 876 feet in length and open 24 hours. Fishermen come here to catch a variety of fish from mangrove snappers to blue fish to mackerel. Just south of the pier is the premiere spot for snorkeling and scuba diving in all of Florida. In fact, the town has been nicknamed “Florida’s Beach Diving Capital.” Three coral reefs are within swimming distance of the shore and rich with a multitude of marine life including tropical fish, turtles, lobsters, and other sea creatures.
